If you’ve recently noticed that the Run Rules Now button in New Outlook is greyed out, you’re not alone. Several users have asked whether this is a bug, and the answer is—well, both yes and no.
What's Going On with New Outlook Rules
Microsoft has temporarily disabled specific rule actions in New Outlook. Why? Because some weren’t working as expected, the engineering team decided it was better to turn them off while they sort things out. The good news is that they’re actively investigating and plan to re-enable the reliable ones soon.
Rules That Are Currently Disabled and Enabled
Update as of November 18, 2025. You won’t be able to run rules with these actions. Microsoft is hopeful with the following expected roll out timelines, but these dates are subject to change.
- December 2025/January 2026
- Display desktop alert
- Play a sound
- 1Q/2Q26
- Forward To
- Forward As
- Attachment To
- Redirect To
- 3Q26 or later
- Send Text
- Message To
The following rules were temporarily disabled while Microsoft investigates the issue. They were enabled on Friday, September 26:
- Categorize
- Move to
- Copy to
Why the Delay with Forwards and Redirects?
Forwarding and redirecting emails involve extra security considerations. Microsoft is working on adding two-factor authentication before re-enabling these features. This step helps prevent hackers from exploiting rules to steal information.
The Bottom Line
For now, focus on using rules to organize your inbox with categorize, move, and copy actions. Also, there are three rule enhancements on the Microsoft Roadmap: Folder Deletion Warning (August), Play a Sound Rule (October), and Display Desktop Alert Rule (October). Through the grapevine, the ability to run rules now on selected folders is coming soon, too. No word yet, on adding the OR command functionality to rules.
If you rely on forwarding or redirecting, hang tight—Microsoft is ensuring that these features return safely and securely.
